OR Metrics

The OR performance metrics that drive surgical volume and revenue

Each metric calculated from your EHR's scheduling and case data. No manual extraction, no spreadsheet compilation.

Block Utilization

Block Utilization Rate

Percentage of allocated block time that is actually used for scheduled cases. Calculated as: (Total In-Room Time) / (Total Allocated Block Time). Reported by subspecialty, surgeon, and time period. Mediflowly surfaces rolling 30-, 60-, and 90-day trends.

Industry target: 75–85% utilization

Prime Time

Prime-Time Utilization

Percentage of prime-time hours (typically 7am–3pm weekdays) used for scheduled surgical cases. Cases performed outside prime-time carry higher labor costs due to differential staffing rates. Mediflowly tracks prime-time vs. off-hours case distribution by subspecialty.

Prime-time optimization reduces labor premium costs

Turnover Time

Room Turnover Time

Time from previous patient out-of-room to next patient in-room. Composed of three phases: patient egress, EVS cleaning, and patient ingress. Mediflowly measures all three phases separately and identifies the specific bottleneck — EVS notification delay vs. slow patient transport.

Benchmark range: 20–35 min for most ORs

First Case

First-Case On-Time Start Rate

Percentage of OR suites with first scheduled case starting within 15 minutes of posted start time. Delays in first-case start cascade through the entire day's schedule. Mediflowly tracks by OR room, surgeon, anesthesia provider, and day of week.

High performers: >85% on-time first cases

EVS Coordination

EVS and Turnover Coordination

Mediflowly integrates with your EVS communication workflow to measure the actual lag between patient-out notification and room-clean confirmation. Most hospitals discover their turnover time problem lives in the EVS notification gap — not in the cleaning itself.

  • Patient-out to EVS-notified time measured per room
  • EVS-notified to room-clean time measured per crew
  • Room-clean to patient-in delay flagged in real time
  • Bottleneck phase identification by room and time of day
Room Turnover Flow Patient Out-of-Room ADT A03 event avg 4 min EVS Notified Workflow trigger avg 18 min Room Clean Clean confirmed avg 6 min Next Case Ready Patient in-room EVS lag often >50% of total
